Chats v5:Marathon

From PJJ Wiki

Jump to: navigation, search

This is the manual page for chat alert/notifier program (Marathon). Board thread can be found here (comments are more than welcome!).

This program allows you to select multiple chats for observation. When something happens in the chat (such as a message is posted or someone joins) the program will notify you with either a popup message (displaying the event) and/or a sound (ding). This way you do not need to have a window/tab open for each chat and check them manually every once in a while. Simply select the chats you want to monitor from the list and let the program do the work for you!

Notable new features in version 2 include:

  • Sorting of chats
  • Sound notification
  • Optional disabling of sound and/or popup messages

The marathon executable

Simple download the zip file and unzip it anywhere. You should simply be able to doubleclick the file called marathon or marathon.jar (see image). This should execute the program which should open with the main window ready for usage. If the window does not show, please check that you have at least Java version 6 installed. In case you do not have Java installed, you can easily get it here (its free). Java is platform independent and it is available for most operating systems.

Features/Screenshots/Manual

Trayed

The marathon tray icon

When you close the program a message box will appear and tell you that the program is now being trayed rather than closed. This means that the program will be minimized and will be running in the background. You can access the program again via the tray in the start menu of your operating system. To exit the program, right click the tray icon and select the exit menu item, or use the file menu in the main program window and select the exit menu item.

Sorting

Sorting the chat list

When the program has started, the chat list will be loaded (this may take a while depending on your connection speed). Due to the large number of chats it can get annoying looking for the few specific chats that you may want to pick out. To make this easier, it is possible to sort the chat list by choosing one out of a number of parameters. It is possible to sort the list by clicking on one of the column headings as shown in the picture.

Multiple Chats

It is possible to select more than one chat for observation. Simply select more than one check box next to the chat you want to keep an eye on!

Message popup

A sample message

By default the program will bring a popup message whenever a new message is posted in a chat selected for observation. This popup will show the ident of the chat in which an event happened and it will show the message itself. See the image for an example. If you do not want popup messages, it is possible to turn these off my right clicking the tray icon and uncheck the Popup Alert menu item.

Sound Alert

The preference menu

By default the program will play a ding sound when an event has happened in a chat. This is especially useful if you do not want to use the popup messages and you are only monitoring a few select chats. As with the message popups, it is entirely possible to disable this feature. Simply right click the marathon tray icon and uncheck the Sound Alert menu item.
