End-Game Beast Mastery

This morning I respecced from 31/20/0 to 0/21/30 in order to be more useful in Molten Core and other end-game instances. This makes me feel downright dirty; I feel as if I've joined the dark side...

Before my respec, Kitten (a good sturdy Durotar Tiger I've had since I was lv 10) was almost useful in Molten Core, and incredibly useful in most other instances such as Blackrock Spire (4 BM Hunters and a Shaman have no problems in BRS).

Due to my respec Kitten lost 1200 armor, 600 health, outdoor running speed, and of course all the nice DPS provided by Beast Mastery. For the first time, I have more health than my pet. It is no longer really useful compared to its level. And that is with Growl, Claw 7, Bite 7, Armor 7, Fire Resistance 4, Shadow Resistance 4.

I've of course gained a lot of personal DPS which is apparently all that counts, but I want to play a Beast Master and I want to participate in end-game contents. However, pets are simply not strong enough to live through many of the encounters there. Hunters are simply forced to play MM/SV even with the many new pet customizations.

Possible ways to make Beast Mastery viable:

  • Boost the low-tier talents "Endurance Training" and "Thick Hide" to at least double of what they provide now.
  • Make pets take less damage (50%) from mob's AoE effects.
  • Make "Efficiency" lower the mana cost of Beast Mastery skills as well.
  • Make "Spirit Bond" tick every 3 seconds for the pet instead of every 10 seconds. Don't really care how much it ticks for the player since hunters should never take damage.
  • Make all pets have base health and armor 20-30% higher than they do now.

Yes, those are big changes, but Beast Mastery needs some radical boost(s) to be truly useful in end-game contents. Or, conversely, MM/SV needs to be nerfed (but imagine the outcry if that happened).

All classes are similarly forced to pick the same or near-same build for end-game contents. Priests/Druids have to heal, Mages have to be frost specced, etc. I have seen that upcoming patches may provide end-game contents that requires different builds working together (such as mobs untankable by warriors), but I remain skeptical until I see it.
